Paul J. Achtemeier Award for New Testament Scholarship

Call forPapers

The Paul J. Achtemeier Award for New Testament Scholarship is open for submission.

Award

There is a $1,000 monetary award. The awarded paper will be delivered at an SBL national or international meeting with a panel discussion. The award may be received only one time.

Qualifications for Submission

Any SBL member who has received a Ph.D. in biblical studies or related field within the last ten (10) years may submit a paper of publishable quality. The paper must not have been previously published or accepted for publication.

Paper Requirements

The applicant will submit a full academic CV and a paper, normally in English, and of no more than 10,000 words including footnotes. A bibliography is not required. Please note your paper will be reviewed anonymously by the award committee. The paper must be submitted in a PDF format. All materials should be sent to achtemeieraward@sbl-site.org If you do not receive a receipt of confirmation within 2 business days please contact Sandra Stewart Kruger at sskruger@sbl-site.org.

Applicants should consult the SBL Handbook of Style. The subject of the paper is open, but it must advance some dimension of New Testament scholarship. The paper will be evaluated within three categories:

persuasive thesis that engages the New Testament and demonstrates quality of scholarship and significance to the field
clarity of expression and thought
originality and creativity
